Review:
Rick and Glenn are released with the help of a townsman, accompanied by Alice who was helping nurse Rick back to health. Doctor Stevens, however, was unfortunately attacked by a zombie on the way out, and Michonne has gone to settle things with the Governor. This definitely had a constant action feel and kept me on edge when reading to see if they would truly escape or not.

le book review number one hundred twenty-six~ Before I Fall

Sunday 26 June 2016

6482837Title: Before I Fall
Author: Lauren Oliver
Standalone
Hardcover
Pages: 470
Genre: Y.A. contemporary fiction, paranormal/fantasy
Year First Published: 2010
Publisher of edition I read: Harper
Personal Star Rating: 4.5/5 stars

Description:
Maybe you can afford to wait. Maybe for you there's a tomorrow. Maybe for you there's one thousand tomorrows, or three thousand, or ten, so much time you can bathe in it, roll around in it, let it slide like coins through your fingers. So much time you can waste it.
But for some of us there's only today. And the truth is, you never really know.

First Line:
"They say that just before you die your whole life flashes before your eyes, but that's not how it happened for me.

Cover Comments:
The cover is beautiful, but not necessarily something I would have picked up if I was browsing bookshelves.

Title Thoughts:
The title can have a double meaning if you interpret it that way.

Review:
I knew from first reading the prologue that this book would destroy me. I wasn't wrong. I was given this book as a present years ago, and I was hesitant to read it because I didn't like Lauren Oliver's Delirium very much, and I also wasn't sure how this would make me feel because I was vaguely aware of the content, but not enough detail to know for sure the exact trajectory of the story. I knew that it would cause some very conflicting feelings though, and this was very true.

This book made me cry. It may not have been the most flowery and poetic in terms of writing style, it may not have been the best written book I have ever read, but it has a raw honesty, a cutting edge that made me feel a lot of emotions and resulted in a lot of flashbacks and memories to my own adolescence, and it made me evaluate my own actions and reactions in situations where people were being bullied. I think that the truth of the matter is that people can be so mean, and at times, can feel justified and validated through their words and actions. However, the way that we affect people can not always be seen, and repercussions from initial ideas can result in a lifetime of feelings of inadequacy and learned helplessness.

After reading this book I am even more happy that I never have to go back to high school, and also thankful that I didn't have to go through this experience in the same way like so many did. I know my experience wasn't perfect, but I was so fortunate that I had people around me to help me and support me through even the most difficult times. Although I often felt so alone during my adolescence, I want everyone to know that things can get better, and that you aren't an exception to deserving help.

If you, or anyone you know is struggling, I've included a link below to get help.

33569Title: That Was Then, This Is Now
Author: S.E. Hinton
Standalone
Paperback
Pages: 159
Year First Published: 1971
Publisher: Speak
Personal Star Rating: 4.5/5 stars

Description:
Does growing up have to mean growing apart?

Since childhood, Bryon and Mark have been as close as brothers. Now things are changing. Bryon's growing up, spending a lot of time with girls, and thinking seriously about who he wants to be. Mark still just lives for the thrill of the moment. The two are growing apart - until Bryon makes a shocking discovery about Mark. Then Bryon faces a terrible decision - one that will change both of their lives forever.

Cover Comments:
I really like this cover. I enjoy how dark it is, and also, that it matches with the copy of The Outsiders that I have.

Title Thoughts:
I think the title is very fitting for the story, and shows the transition through a Liminal Space that adolescence encompasses.

Review:
The Outsiders was one of my favourite books that I have read, and I was so excited when I bought this book years ago when I found out that Hinton had written other books. Although I wasn't as thrilled about the ending when reading this, and perhaps I was more cynical of the choices the characters made that I may not have been as critical if I had read this when I was younger. However, I am glad that I waited to read this until I had more experience and had already been through adolescence. I think that the characters were well written, although I would have liked to understand Mark more. He seems to have a lot of depth of character and that we also didn't get to know Bryon independently of the influence that others had on him. However, it portrayed an honest story of teenagers that shows how rough it can be to grow up.

Welcome to Feature Friday!

I love the funky purple of this desk/ shelving unit combination. This would be the perfect, unique addition to any dorm room, and any smaller room because it creates so much extra storage space. I can imagine wicker basket units sitting in some of the openings to keep school supplies stored and organized, and a nice crisp and comfy white chair to contrast the dark purple. I especially like the dresser drawers and table legs to add visual appeal.

Author: S.E. Hinton
Standalone
Paperback
Pages: 180
Year First Published: 1967

Personal Star Rating: 5/5 stars

Description:
In Ponyboy's world there are two types of people. There are the Socs, the rich society kids who get away with anything. Then there are the greasers, like Ponyboy, who aren't so lucky. Ponyboy has a few things he can count on: his older brothers, his friends, and trouble with the Socs, whose idea of a good time is beating up greasers. At least he knows what to expect - until the night things go too far.

Cover Comments:
I love the leather jacket on the cover of this edition and the basic white t-shirt. It symbolizes the archetypal image of a greaser.

Title Thoughts:
The title is perfect. The Outsiders expresses just how outcast the characters are.

Review:
I read this book years ago, but it is still one of the more important books that I have read. It encompasses adolescence and what it means to grow up. It shows an honest look at what rough and tough life is like, while holding on to an innocence that eventually is lost as life becomes harder for the teenagers in the book. I would recommend this book to everyone growing up and although it was written, it has stood the test of time in capturing the angst and struggles that are faced during adolescence.

I really like the size and style of this bookcase. I especially like the drawers below and the gold on navy accent. This would be the perfect addition in a child's room, especially to fit beside a desk, or tucked near a closet. This little unit wouldn't take up too much space, and the drawers would be perfect for other toys.

Soon, though, the surviving members of the team begin experiencing some strange phenomena, such as Runciter's face appearing on coins and the world seeming to move backward in time. As consumables deteriorate and technology gets ever more primitive, the group needs to find out what is causing the shifts and what a mysterious product called Ubik has to do with it all.

Cover Comments:
I think the cover is very effective and showcases how important the canister is in the overall story.

Title Thoughts:
Unique, catchy, and encompasses the plot of the story.

Review:
Throughout the book I had no idea what exactly was going on, and found myself in a state of confusion, but in the best way possible. The wondering made it extremely interesting and made it extremely captivating. I enjoyed reading this book and appreciated the potentially ambiguous ending. I enjoyed how interesting this book was and how it has persisted through decades to still be relevant to contemporary audiences. I would recommend this to all those who enjoy science fiction and those who are looking for something unique to read.
